The One Big Thing (1924) by James B. Hendryx
David White (whitebks@hotmail.com) noted that this book was missing from the list of novels in a message on the Hendryx list (16 April 2001):
Attached is a photo of the book. The title is "The One Big Thing" (TOBT). Copyright info states 1923 by Doubleday, Page & Co., and 1916 by the Frank A. Munsey Co. The date on the title page is 1924 and is published by Garden City Publishing Co. The book is in wraps in the same format as "The Challenge of the North" (TCOTN). TCOTN is number 8 in the PB series and TOBT is number 20 in the series.
I would guess that Munsey's Magazine printed the story in 1916, I do not know if Doubleday Page printed the book in hardcover. I looked through my other Hendryx books and found the title "Good Men and Bad" 1954, (GMAB) starts out with the same story but the names of people and places were changed. Also TOBT is shorter (122 pages) than GMAB (192 pages).
Al Lund (alund@dccnet.com) responded with additional information:
"The One Big Thing" was first published in All-Story Weekly as a serial starting in January 8, 1916. It was next published in digest size "A Pocket Copyright", by Garden City Pub of N.Y. There were just the 3 novels as you noted re-published in digest size. JBH certainly had a variety of places to publish & re-publish his stories.
