James B. Hendryx -- Short Stories

JBH published many short stories, novelettes, and serials in Argosy, Everybody's, American Boy, Popular Magazine, Short Stories, etc. Many of his novels first appeared in serial form in pulp magazines, and were often illustrated. The 1929-30 Who's Who Among North American Authors lists JBH as a contributor to the following: Cavalier, All-Story, Popular, American Boy, Adventure, Everybody's, McClure's, Triple-X, Short Stories, and Frontier, in addition the the Cincinnatti Enquier [sic].

Original of Novels

Al Lund, Zeke, and Rick Hall (see Fans) have tracked down the pulp origins of all but 5 of the novels. Zeke provided a list of the first pulp publication dates. Rick Hall provided most of the following index of the short stories, with some additions by Gray John Smith (Michael Perlow), and Bill Caruth. Rick noted that "about 1 in 3 issues of Short Stories in the 30s and 40s seems to have a story or part of a serial by Hendryx". American Boy carried numerous Connie Morgan short stories over a period of 30 years. None of the Connie Morgan short stories are listed here.

The list below has been superseded by lists of Al Lund and Rick Hall, but I have yet to update this.

The Popular
Magazine
1917-05-07 Flat Gold  74-page novelette. It begins with Dan Burke placed his bets deliberately, yet obviously without thought of system. They were small bets, as bets go in Smalltown, and, more often than not, the young man's eyes watched the faces of his fellow players rather than the course of the little white ball. Did this appear later in a novel?
